Bar Maintenance

Posted 20 May 2005 by

↗ The current version of this post is on the live site: https://pandasthumb.org/archives/2005/05/bar-maintenance.html

As a virtual bar, the Panda’s Thumb relies on passing packets to enable the contributors to say their stuff and the commenters to put in their two cents. Well, for various reasons the management hasn’t been completely happy with the current packet-passer, and has arranged for a new packet-passing service. Unfortunately, this means that in the switchover, there may be a longish period where the name and the particular address used aren’t matched up. We have to change the “domain name service” (thanks, “wbrameld4”)  entries for PT tonight, and these may take up to 48 hours to propagate. So don’t be surprised if you can’t get to PT this weekend. We hope that it won’t take that long for the DNS entries to propagate, but here we’ll give you fair warning.

Don't you mean "domain name service?"

Better packet passing that buck passing. It's nice to be on the science side . . .

wbrameld4,

Er, yes, apparently. I'll try to get some sleep before posting again.

And here I thought "domain" meant something like eukaryotes or eubacteria or archaea...

(Don't mind me; I'm short on sleep too.)

Omigosh, I might actually have to find a LIFE for a whole 48 hours !!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh well, my kayak frame needs to be skinned anyway. . . . :>

make me some of that porter, Lenny!

hmm. after a couple of small initial bumps (redirects to old pages), which now have resolved themselves for me, I find PT to have much quicker access.

definetly an improvement.

congrats.

Sometimes being the guy who can clear the nameserver cache has its momentary benefits.

MUCH better performance.

You could of course simply have given us the actual IP address of the new servers, so we can reach it by just typing it in the address bar, like so:

66.15.48.90/pt (or whatever the actual folder on the host is)

Non-authoritative answer:
Name: pandasthumb.org
Address: 66.15.48.90
Aliases: www.pandasthumb.org

Federico,

The actual name of the folder is "pandasthumb.org". If you figure out how to get to it using the dotted quad IP address and the folder name, please let me know about it. Since the virtual hosted folders are not under the default server directory, I will want to eradicate that security bug as soon as possible.

don't forget to change the entries for your whois.net lookup if you haven't done so already.

The next time you have to deal with this, you can cut that "up to 48 hours to propagate" by chopping down the "time to live" parameter on the name service entries a couple days in advance. Consult your local geek for details.
