You might be just 5 years too old to remember this, although you might have seen the video in the Grad Students Club at the time.
But Happy Birthday anyway PZ

Cute post.
It would be cuter still if our posters would remember to check the effect that the "width" of photos, quotes, and other included matter have upon the sidebar and the previous posts before abandoning the most recent to the questionable mercy of the commentators.
Here, as has happened all too often over the past two or three months, Reed's cute kitty photo requires more "width" than the juxtaposition of post and sidebar allows, so we get endless reams of white space between his intro verbiage and the kitty photo, which finds room for itself only beneath the tail of the sidebar.
Pushing all the other week's posts way down the scroll...
Damn it. I thought I'd taken that into account when reducing the width of the image. But I forgot that I widened the side bar last month. Anyway, it is now fixed.
PT's next layout will not have such issues.

Reed, thanks!
It's a minor thing, but one a couple of us have whined about several times.
It's nice just to be heard, even if not all "technical" issues are so directly dealt with...!

Surely there must be other mechanisms for creating kittens than a unitary event that can occur only once in the entire history of the universe!
Does turning 50 imply a loss of the ability to avoid a fallacy of affirmation of the consequent? "When PZ turns 50" != "Only when PZ turns 50".
Popper's Ghost · 9 March 2007
Also, there could be time loops, reincarnation, other PZ's ... and then there's Roger Penrose's hypothesis that, after the universe expands sufficiently, it will collapse and time will run backwards (because the mathematics of physics is time-wise symmetric).
This creature actually has eight limbs (the apparent fuzziness might just be cilia, or lichen, or somethin'...).
(And, since I haven't come up with a clever lyrical response yet, I'd better thank PG for the Harry Belafonte tune now, before I forget...)

Of course, as soon as I post the foregoing, inspiration strikes...
So here's to you, PG:
From "Bus To Baton Rouge" by Lucinda Williams (off the Essence CD):
The driveway was covered with tiny white seashells
A fig tree stood in the backyard
There are other things I remember, as well
But to tell them would be just too hard
Ghosts in the wind
That blow through my life
Follow me wherever I go
I'll never be free from these chains inside
Hidden deep down in my soul

The man is godlike in his capabilities....
oh no I didn't mean that...
he is, er, MANLIKE in his awesomeness...
yeah that's it..

The timbre of Lucinda's voice as she sings this song?
Within the song, the childhood situations that gave rise to the memories and emotions that she can't shake loose, "that follow [her] wherever she goes."
Not an ethereal metaphysical entity, that's fer shure...
Very cute kitten, but I think that god didn't create it... cell division did. Go to any site about cells, mitosis, cell division, or anything of that sort and it will explain it for you. If you don't feel like looking the truth up, you can just keep on beliving in the stork. Question: wouldn't the cat attack the stork????

That's an awfully fuzzy-looking cephalopod.
It doesn't look like it likes water.

I'm surprised that no one has asked which one of those kittens was created by God for PZ's present.
It's a question that only an idist can "answer".
AJS · 11 March 2007
No, the kitten was born.

RIP fuzzy heathens.
I found out last night that both these kittens got hit by cars and killed over the weekend.
Note that they were several months older than the above picture, which was taken during Winterval.

Kittens violate the second law of thermodynamics.
Are you kidding?! They enforce the second law of thermodynamics, especially when they jump up on tables.
khan · 12 March 2007
Kittens can levitate, ricochet, teleport and discorporate (and take up most of a double bed).
Henry J · 13 March 2007
Re "discorporate"
At least until they learn to use the litter box... (Or did I misunderstand that word? :) )
