Since folks have been putting up shots, I think I can
be forgiven to link to my new batch of biosci shots:

http://www.vectorsite.net/gfxpx_tmp06.html

This page is mammals pix -- the maned wolves ("oversized
red foxes on stilts") are interesting, other nice shots
are pandas, serval, a really nice close-up of a white-faced
gibbon, sengi, and tree shrew (plus "special guest primate").

Click NEXT at top of page to go to birds, nice osprey
shots, also secretary bird, indian great hornbill, and
a pleasing shot of a barn swallow.

Click NEXT to go to other animals -- the whale shark
pictures are nice, also the sea dragon and mud skipper
pix. Some of the insect shots really came out nice --
check the hi-res on the coupling craneflies and
grasshoppers, and particularly the green metallic bee,
I have an itch to enter that one in a competition.

Click NEXT to go to plants and fossils. Plants are kind
of hard to take exciting shots of, though the cleome
/ spider flowers are nice. The shots from the "Rhino
Barn" at Ashfall State Park in Nebraska are interesting
as well. Check the T.Rex from WWCC -- the student union
building is integrated seamlessly with a natural history
museum and the T.Rex is in the cafeteria!

There's other non-biosci stuff in the batch, click on
INDEX at top to get the indexes to all the new stuff,
click on INDEX again to go up to the main photo archive.
I haven't integrated the new stuff into the main archive
yet but that should be done soon.

This species already has a thread, just a week ago. ;)

Well, it is a big subject :) Is it, perhaps, typical of the perversity of taxomomists that, even for an animal with *iconic* nose and ears, they choose to name it with reference to its teeth....?

Henry J · 20 October 2008

Well, it is a big subject :)

Maybe even a jumbo subject? :D

Reed A. Cartwright · 20 October 2008

Some might even think that there is a giant elephant in the room....

Not in this cubicle there isn't! :)

I apologize in advance ...
"What's big and grey and comes in quarts?" ... :-)

To be fair, we need to show a donkey next, lest people think this is a Republican blog.

Reed A. Cartwright · 20 October 2008

Will do. I think I have some ass pictures laying around. I'll probably need to find a freebird for the Libertarians.

We're more likely to get the Irreducibly Casey Luskin complaining that we're insulting McCain by implying that he's a transitional fossil.

John Kwok · 21 October 2008

Hi Reed,

'Tis a funny, and still great, shot of an elephant enjoying him/herself. Well done! You might have found yourself a great second career.

All the best,

John

However, I wonder what those savants DaveScot Springer and Bill Dembski would be saying. Oh wait, I know.... they'll suggest a moose in honor of Governor Palin. Cheers, John P. S. Who said Republicans like yours truly can't appreciate humor?

I'm currently taking a population genetics course with Dr. Alfred Roca, one of the authors of "Genetic Evidence for Two Species of Elephant in Africa". I think this fact is totally awesome.

here's a good joke for you, John:

Obama is currently up 10 points, McCain lost every debate as judged by the vast majority of analysts, and Sarah Palin is a complete joke who was out-debated by Katie Couric.

You better get used to looking at pictures of real elephants, 'cause you ain't gonna be seeing many elephant logos around the Hill for a while.

pretty funny, right?

well, I'm laughing anyway. At McCain.

and you.

I might be wrong, but isn't that grey rock next to the elephant a fossilised Tyranosaurus rex brain? It looks almost identical to a photo I saw of a fossilised human brain I saw on Pharyngula, but much larger.
