If You Use Verizon FIOS, Do Me A Favor
Since January 10, 2012, I've been unable to connect to my email or any of the web applications serving Antievolution.org, Austringer.net, and TalkDesign.org from my Verizon FIOS residential internet service account. The servers hosting those are on a Verizon FIOS Business service account.
This isn't a problem with the servers. I'm able to access everything fine via my smartphone or from other ISPs.
This isn't a problem just at my house. My parents' ISP is Verizon FIOS, and they've been unable to access the Austringer blog since January 10th, too.
This limits my efficiency on dealing with things if my home internet doesn't actually get me to the sites I do system administration on and the email where various lists are handled. I'm using AnonymoX just to be able to hit various sites in my browser, which is a real pain.
The favor: If you have Verizon FIOS, try pulling up the Austringer blog. If you have the same problem, your browser will timeout rather than display anything. Please leave a comment saying whether you were successful or unsuccessful in getting the blog. If you are unsuccessful, I'd really appreciate it if you could enter a ticket with Verizon technical support. Reference ticket numbers TXP08R8CY and FLCP08R8EN if you put in your own ticket. I've had tickets in since January 10th, but no solution has turned up, and a high-level Verizon network person tonight seemed to be on the verge of cancelling the tickets that are currently active without fixing the problem.

we had a similar problem locally, two subnets being assigned to fios customers in our local area were blocked on our verizon business internet connections router (verizon's last hop before our router). took one week for them to fix it. lower levels kept doing ping and traceroutes from the router in question but those would work because it didn't have to cross the router.

I don't know jack about how the internet works, but I do know that the above referenced site does not work from my verizon fios ISP. Keep up the good work.
blotsalot · 3 February 2012
correction: "sites do..." None of the referenced sites work, they time out without loading. Will launch an investigation with Verizon tomorow.

I clicked on the Austringer link and the site came right up. I have a FIOS residential account. I also clicked on the antievolution site over at Ed Brayton's blog and again, the site came right up. I am using Firefox for Mac. Maybe this is a Windows problem.
SLC · 3 February 2012
I also tried Safari and Chrome and again, the Austringer site came right up.

Thanks, folks, this is better data than I've gotten so far in 23 days of roundabout with Verizon tech support. Please keep it coming.
SLC: I have Firefox on a Mac (Leopard), Chrome and Firefox on Windows 7, and Chromium on Ubuntu 11.10 here, and none of those connect to my blog. The people I know to be affected by the problem have routes going through Verizon's Tampa or Dallas data centers. Just to make sure, though, please tell me if you use an anonymizing proxy service by default on your browser. If I use a proxy, I can access the web sites.

I have Comcast as my ISP and haven't been able to see any of those sites either in the last week or so either.
Could this be some sort of nefarious DOS attack?
Wesley R. Elsberry · 3 February 2012
The Verizon techs paid a visit to the Texas location and are now convinced that there is a real problem going. They don't have a quick fix to apply, but we're more confident now that they'll be working on it.
I hadn't heard of Comcast involvement before. I'll pass that along.

Cannot reach any of them from a Verizon FiOS account in Crofton, MD. I had no problems reaching any of the sites from my smartphone (Sprint). Considering that I used the smartphone first on my WiFi (no success), then switched to 3G (success), I'm certain it's not a browser issue; it's definitely a "problem of the interwebz". I just analyzed the connection using Wireshark. The DNS went through with no problem. It goes through the initial TCP SYN/SYN-ACK/ACK with no problem. After that, it gets weird. It appears as if my ACKs for the packet transmissions are not getting through.
Let me know if you want the PCAP file. I'd be happy to send it along.

Using ComCast from Hattiesburg, MS and Austringer comes up fine; if there is also a problem with ComCast then it isn't a universal problem. Wish I could help more, but I have no Verizon services at all. Good luck.
John_S · 4 February 2012
Austringer comes up fine on Comcast in NJ, too.

I have Comcast in San Jose CA, can't connect to the sites with Firefox, IE Explorer, or Chrome. Everything just times out.
Tried using an IP anonymizer from my same home computer and connected right away. Very weird - looks like some kind of subnet masking / filtering issue.

I have been having *intermittent* problems accessing AtBC for a couple of weeks. Right now I cannot access AtBC nor austringer.
Using FiOS ISP in Massachusetts and IE or Firefox on a PC, or Safari on a Mac...
Using an anonymizer solves the problem.

I have FIOS and it comes up right away for me in the Boston area.

garystar: Yes, I would appreciate the PCAP file. I have a Gmail account as "welsberr".

Has anyone having a problem tried changing your DNS server to
either Google or OpenDns? Both are free.
http://www.top-windows-tutorials.com/using-opendns-vista.html
Wesley R. Elsberry · 5 February 2012
As noted in the post, simply using a proxy in my browser allows me to get to the sites. That shouldn't work if it were a DNS issue.
It isn't DNS.
Charley Horse · 6 February 2012
Suggesting changing the DNS server is a solution that has worked for me
and many others. That is why I suggested it. Using a proxy may be forcing
your DNS server to not recognize your computer's IP address. That could easily
be the same as changing DNS server.
I had a similar problem as you on a computer dual booted with Windows and Linux. Both
OS's would stop resolving the addresses at the same time. Once I changed DNS server
to OpenDNS....problem has never recurred in 2 years. My conclusion is that their
is a common software bug in the servers. I am not using a router...direct cable
connection and cable modem.
You can easily switch back if the DNS server change turns out to not be the problem or
just leave it. OpenDns works just fine.

I appreciate "Charley Horse"'s enthusiasm for DNS-centric approaches to network troubleshooting. But there are other things that can go wrong in networking besides DNS, and the particular problem I'm trying to get fixed here is one of them. Rest assured that DNS resolution was considered, tested, and eliminated as being relevant to the problem.
Just a point of clarification: no one has reported resolving *this problem* by changing nameservers.
B. Wren · 6 February 2012
There were a variety of sites that were unavailable from Southern California over the last three days. That problem was apparently corrected today as everything is working fine now for me. I can connect to the Austringer site now with no problem.
Wesley R. Elsberry · 7 February 2012
B. Wren, thanks for the SoCal report. Unfortunately, my connection problem is still persisting.
John · 8 February 2012
This is not a fix but a suggestion about Verizon. Do fans of Panda's Thumb know that "... AT&T and Verizon Wireless contributed $386,000 and $35,500 respectively to members of the House Tea Party Caucus in the 2010 elections, including Caucus founder Rep. Michele Bachmann. And since 2000, AT&T has contributed $462,739 to Texas Governor Rick Perry"? You don't HAVE to indirectly give money to anti-science candidates. My phone is with Credo Mobile (on the Sprint network) and they donate to progressive causes only. I won't share a link in case this looks like I'm advertising, which would be inappropriate for this comments thread, but consider Credo Mobile. (No, I don't work for them or get any kind of compensation, and I never promote companies of any kind, I just like not being part of the rightwing dominance of our national conversation.) Price = comparable and tech support was always great for me in the past. Thanks for considering.
LarryD · 8 February 2012
I tried austringer.net on my Comcast connection and was not able to load the page. I am connected in the Seattle area. I could not connect on Linux or XP. Chromium on a Debian Linux box didn't work either..
Wesley R. Elsberry · 8 February 2012
John, thanks for the tip. Unfortunately, I'm talking about ISP service to my home, not my mobile provider.

Still can't see either site from San Jose CA with Comcast.

I cannot access the sites from home (unless I use an anonymizer), but I can access from work. Both locations are served by Verizon FiOS (business vs residential accounts), a mere 30 miles apart in Eastern Massachusetts. I put in a ticket with them, but so far have only received a generic response.
